Inositol is also called myo-inositol powder. It is a carbocyclic polyol, a constituent of phospholipids (phosphatidyl inositols) involved in membrane structure and as part of the signaling mechanism for hormones which act at the cell surface. A number of biological processes are involved, including insulin signal transduction, cytoskeleton assembly, nerve guidance, intracellular calcium concentration control, cell membrane potential maintenance, serotonin activity modulation, breakdown of fat and reducing blood cholesterol. Inositol is said to promote healthy hair, hair growth, and helps in controlling estrogen levels. Inositol is found in many foods, such as cereals with high bran content, nuts, beans, and fruit, especially cantaloupe melons and oranges.
Inositol seems to be tolerated quite well. But massive doses may see some minor side effects, such as nausea, fatigue, headaches, dizziness.
